To add a link to an Instagram Story, create or upload the Story, open the sticker tray, choose Link, enter the destination URL and tap Done. Place the sticker where viewers can see it, then finish publishing your Story. Instagram describes this flow in its official link-sticker instructions.
For a business, the useful part is what happens after the tap. A Story about a product should lead to the information that helps someone choose it. A Story about a service should make the next conversation easy to start. This guide pairs the setup with an original planning worksheet and a fictional example you can adapt to your next campaign.
Choose the destination before designing the Story
Write down the action you want an interested viewer to take: compare sizes, explore a collection, see a portfolio or request a quote. Then choose the page that makes that action easy. Opening with the destination keeps the creative, invitation and landing page connected.
A general homepage can work for a broad introduction. For a specific product demonstration, use the matching product or information page. If your Story promises a size guide, the visitor should be able to find that guide immediately after opening the link.
Check the audience details as well. A worldwide campaign needs clear information about the countries you serve, relevant currency choices and any booking time zone. Put those details where a prospective customer can use them while deciding.
Add the Instagram Story link sticker
- Prepare the Story. Capture a photo or video, or upload the finished creative to your Story.
- Open stickers. Select the sticker tool and choose Link.
- Enter the destination. Paste your checked website URL and select Done.
- Position and review. Place the sticker away from the product detail or text viewers need to read. Finish publishing, then check the link from the published Story.
The first three steps follow Instagram’s documented workflow. The positioning and visitor checks are the editorial review process used in this guide. Keep the URL in your campaign notes so another team member can verify the same destination.
If the Link sticker is unavailable in your Story editor, use an available profile destination and adjust the invitation to match. For example, ask viewers to open the named link in your profile. Preview that route before sharing the Story.
Give the viewer a clear reason to tap
Use the surrounding Story text to explain what the link opens. “See the two available sizes” gives someone a more concrete reason to continue than an unexplained arrow. Keep the invitation close enough to the sticker that the relationship is obvious.
Choose one main action for each Story. A product detail, a short demonstration and a clear invitation can work together in a single frame. If the message needs several frames, give the frame containing the link enough context to make sense on its own.
For video creative, our product demo video script template helps turn the customer’s question into a short demonstration. Decide what the website should explain next before writing the closing line.
A fictional example: help a shopper compare sizes
Imagine a homeware shop selling a desk organizer in two sizes. Its Story shows each organizer beside the same laptop. The on-screen invitation reads: “Which size fits your desk? Tap the link to compare dimensions.”
The sticker opens a comparison page showing both sets of measurements, photographs and links to the two product options. The team checks that the units are clear and that a phone visitor can move from the comparison to the chosen product without searching the site.
This example is a planning exercise, not a reported campaign. The useful connection is specific: the Story introduces a size question, the page answers it, and the next action lets the shopper explore the matching option. Replace the product and wording with facts from your own offer.
Copy this Story-to-page worksheet
Complete one worksheet for each distinct destination. Keep it beside the creative so the person publishing the Story can check the promise, link and review owner together.
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Customer question | The decision the Story helps with. Example: which organizer size fits this desk? |
| Visible invitation | The exact action viewers will read. Example: compare the two sizes. |
| Destination | The full URL and the page section that answers the question. |
| Page readiness | Current details, working next action, clear region or booking information where relevant. |
| Campaign label | The agreed placement name in your link register, such as story_size_guide. |
| Review owner | Who checks the published route, records useful questions and updates the link when the offer changes. |
Test the published customer journey
Open the Story on a phone and follow the sticker. Read the destination as someone seeing the business for the first time. Confirm the page loads, the promised information is easy to find and the next button opens the right product, booking page or enquiry form.
Ask a colleague to describe what they expect before tapping. If their expectation differs from the page, revise the Story invitation or destination. This quick review often exposes an unclear label, the wrong product variant or a page that needs a more obvious next step.
For campaign measurement, follow our social media UTM tracking guide. It explains consistent link labels and the website reports used to review them. Record website visits and useful customer actions separately, then choose one change to investigate at your next review.
Build the next campaign around a ready destination
A clear Story link gives interested viewers somewhere useful to go. Pair it with a profile that introduces your offer; our Instagram pinned-post checklist helps you select the content visitors see first.
