How to Pin Instagram Posts: A Business Profile Checklist

Three pinned post cards illustrating a storefront, product demonstration and customer conversation.

Pinned Instagram posts give a business a useful place to introduce its offer, answer an important customer question and explain the next step. Choose those posts with the visitor’s needs in mind, so the top of your profile presents a clear, connected introduction.

This guide explains the current pin and unpin controls, then gives you an original three-slot worksheet for choosing what to feature. You can use the same approach for a product business, service provider or creator with a clear offer.

How to pin and unpin an Instagram post

Instagram’s official iPhone instructions, checked on 15 October 2026, allow up to three posts at the top of your profile.

  1. Go to your profile and open the post you want to feature.
  2. Open its Options menu.
  3. Select Pin to main grid.

To remove the pin, open that post’s menu and choose Unpin from main grid. Instagram says the post then returns to its original grid position.

Give each featured post a different job

Start by imagining a person who has just discovered your business. They may need to understand what you offer, decide whether it fits their situation and find out how to enquire or buy. Your featured posts can help answer those questions together.

Review your existing content before creating anything new. A clear introduction or helpful demonstration may already be available. Read the caption and check the details as well as the image: an attractive post can still contain an expired offer or an outdated contact instruction.

Planning slotWhat the post should help a visitor understand
1. Introduce the offerWhat the business provides, who it serves and which need the product or service addresses.
2. Answer a decision questionA useful detail such as size, process, suitability, service coverage or what is included.
3. Explain the next stepHow to explore the relevant collection, prepare an enquiry or start the booking conversation.

These are planning roles you can adapt. Check the final profile arrangement in your account after pinning; the worksheet does not prescribe a platform ordering rule. If two posts answer the same question, consider whether another useful customer question deserves that space.

Build your three-post selection worksheet

Create one short record for each candidate post. Keeping the reasoning alongside the link helps a teammate understand why it was selected and when it needs another review.

  • Post link: record the exact item so everyone reviews the same content.
  • Visitor question: write the question this post answers in plain language.
  • Useful detail: identify the information, demonstration or explanation that makes the post worth opening.
  • Next action: note where an interested person should go or what they should ask.
  • Review trigger: name the change that would make the post need updating, such as a new location, product revision or completed promotion.
  • Owner: assign someone to keep the post and its destination current.

If a product needs a clearer explanation, prepare a focused demonstration using our product demo video script template. The goal is to make an important detail easy to understand before choosing that content for a prominent place on the profile.

Fictional example: a plant shop’s profile introduction

This is a fictional planning example, not a customer result. Green Corner sells indoor plants and helps customers choose options for their rooms. Its team wants visitors to understand the shop’s range and arrive with enough information for a useful conversation.

For the introduction slot, the team chooses a post showing its current plant categories and explaining whom the shop helps. The decision-question slot answers “What should I know about my room before choosing a plant?” with an explanation of light and available space. The next-step post invites visitors to explore the current collection or ask the team about a suitable option.

The owner records each post link and checks the collection destination. A teammate checks that the captions use consistent names and current opening information. Their review triggers include a changed collection, a new location or a different enquiry route. The three posts now have distinct purposes and a clear maintenance plan.

Check the profile as a customer journey

After pinning, look at the profile as a whole. Open each featured post and follow its suggested action. Check that the business name, offer and destination agree, and that a visitor can find the information mentioned in the caption.

Ask a colleague who did not prepare the posts to explain what the business offers and what they would do next. If their answer differs from your intention, identify the missing information and improve that specific part. This is a practical clarity check, not a performance test.

Use our Instagram profile audit checklist to review the surrounding bio, contact route and recent content. Keep a brief note of recurring customer questions: those questions can help you decide which featured explanation to improve next.

Keep the featured selection current

Review your selection when the business changes an offer, destination or priority. Save the reason for a replacement so the next person managing the account understands the decision. A useful maintenance record is simply the post link, its purpose, the owner and the next review trigger.
